Meetings

Regular monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., however times and locations may vary.

Non-members are welcome to attend!

July 21, 2009 - New Benton Riverside Library, 7:00 p.m. (program by Lois Ledure, history of Commerce with photos)

August 18, 2009 - Benton Courthouse, 7:00 p.m. (program by Tom Dirnberger, Recorder's Office, on marriage licenses and land records)

September 15, 2009, New Benton Riverside Library (6 p.m. - Election of Officers) (7:00 p.m. - program by Mike Hahn who will speak on Charles Schenimann's Civil War letters)

October 20, 2009, Cape Girardeau Public Library, 611 N. Clark Street, 7:00 p.m. (Tour of the genealogy area in the new library)

November 17, 2009, New Benton Riverside Library, 7 p.m. (Meeting to go over plans for 2010. We will have info to hand out.)

December 6, 2009 - Christmas Party. Please join us for an afternoon of merriment as we gather at the Charles Isaac and Lizzie Hunter Moore Anderson House located on the town square in Commerce. This Queen Ann Victorian home is listed on the National Register of Hstoric Places and is being painstakingly restored to its glory days of the early 1900's by Bill & Susan Bailey, who are the descendants of the Andersons. The Baileys always have a story about their home and the citizens of Commerce when Commerce was a booming river town. All are welcome for this enriching and fun afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

June 16, 2009, meeting was held at the Sikeston Depot for a tour and history at 7:00 p.m.

May 19, 2009, meeting was held at the Cape Girardeau County Archives Center at 112 E. Washington Street, Jackson, Missouri, at 6:00 p.m. and we toured the historical books and records.

April 21, 2009, was held at the Sikeston Depot at 7:00 p.m. and Paul Hill discussed how Scott County was formed.

March 17, 2009, we met at the Riverside Regional Library with Conrad Hudson speaking on El Camino Real, the King's Highway.

February 27, 2009, we met at the Riverside Regional Library with Conrad Hudson speaking on General Nathanial Watkins, the Statesman of Missouri.

On December 7, 2008 we had a Christmas party at the home of Bill and Susan Bailey in Commerce, Missouri.

Our October meeting we had the pleasure of having our Recorder of Deeds, Tom Dirnberger , give us a tour and demo of the process of document research and retrieval.

At our September meeting held at the Scott County Courthouse, the had "The Living Lincoln, Charles Brame". We had a great turnout to enjoy this performance.

At our August meeting held at the Sikeston Depot, Sikeston Mayor Mike Marshall talked to us about the Scott County history of Blodgett, Missouri.

At our July, 2008 meeting Dr. Joel Rhodes assistant professor of history at SEMO spoke to us on the life of Louis Houck who is best remembered for the Houck Railroads of Southeast Missouri which were constructed in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Dr Rhodes also held a question and answer period after his presentation and then autographed his book for the members who purchased one.

The speaker for our June 17, 2008 was Dr. Frank Nickell, director of the Southeast Missouri State University Center for Regional History who spoke to us about the history, background, characteristics, and humor of those who settled in Missouri, especially Swamp-East Missouri.

At our May 20, 2008 meeting David Dickey showed a video and spoke on the "History of Thebes Bridge"

The speaker for the July 17, 2007 meeting was David Briggs, the subject of the program was "Champ Clark & Bennett Clark", a father & son duo, Missourians, both influential in early 20th century politics

At our June 19th, 2007 meeting, Jane Jackson from Cape Girardeau County Archives was our featured speaker and she spoke regarding the Lewis & Clark Expedition and the tie-in to Scott County upon their return to Missouri.

At our meeting on the evening of May 15th, 2007, Dr. Frank Nickell, director of the Southeast Missouri State University Center for Regional History was our speaker and the title of his presentation was

"Safari in Southeast Missouri"
