The house was built in the 1830’s by Joseph and Elizabeth Johnson Hunter. It is a two story home with 10 rooms and 3 stairways. It is the first framed home built in Benton. Joseph Hunter was from New Madrid, MO. They had 3 children-Anna Elizabeth Hunter, who married Joseph Harvey Moore. They lived in Commerce, MO. Mary “Maria” Hunter who married Major James Parrot and a son, Richard Henry, who died in childhood. Joseph and Elizabeth ran a store out of the house. While on the way to New Madrid, Joseph fell off his horse and died. Elizabeth then married a man named Albion Crow. They continued to run the store out of the house. Albion died in 1868 and Elizabeth continued to live in the house until she died in 1883. Dr. Sydney Moore lived in the house at one time and had his office in the house.
Russell and Judy have lived in the house for six years and are restoring the house.
