Headstone of William Hunter and wife

This photo is from the Deborah (Gibbs) Gunter collection. William Hunter came to Benton in 1880 where he was engaged in the practice of law. His father, Thomas Hunter married Eliza Myers, the daughter of William Myers, the founder of Benton. Hunter was elected Prosecuting Attorney in 1876 and twice reelected. In 1883, he was nominated by the Democratic Convention and elected to represent the Twenty-third Senatorial District of Missouri--Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid, Stoddard, Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties. He served as the Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, Corporations: University, Public and Normal Schools and others. He married Ella Walker, a native of New Madrid County. They are buried in the Benton Cemetery.
